10 Steps to Prepare Your Home for Winter

As the temperature in Perth begins to drop there are a few things you can do to get your home safe and ready for winter. Below, we’ve put together a list of tips and recommendations to help you stay warm, stay safe and enjoy the cooler months in cosy comfort.

Make sure all your outdoor electrical products are weatherproof and designed for outdoor use.

This should go without saying but applies even more so during autumn and winter when you’re more likely to deal with rainfall and flooding. This time of year also brings rougher winds and often quite violent storms, so having tough electrical products that can withstand a bit of a battering is a must.

Get your hot water system serviced.

There’s no worse time of year to run out of hot water, so if it’s been a while since your last service now is the time to book it. A lot of issues with hot water systems are easily preventable, so don’t wait until it’s too late, book in a service and enjoy consistent hot water all winter long.

Sweep away fallen leaves.

If your trees lose a lot of leaves in autumn or winter make sure to clear them away from any outdoor electrical outlets you have. Dry leaves are highly combustible so sweeping away any fallen leaves can help you prevent electrical fires.

Check the safety switches on your switchboard and power points.

Make sure to test your safety switches regularly, especially in winter. If water from heavy rainfall gets into your home and comes into contact with your electrical wiring, a safety switch is there to keep you protected. Depending on the age and condition of your switchboard it may need to be repaired or upgraded.

  • Consider installing a backup generator.

This can be a good option if you are in an area prone to power outages due to extreme weather conditions and can’t afford to lose power completely. If you do choose to install a generator, make sure it is connected properly by a licensed electrician.

  • Switch your ceiling fan to reverse.

Many ceiling fans these days have a reverse function to help you circulate warm air in winter that would otherwise rise to the top of the room and stay there. On a low setting, on reverse, the fan will create an updraft to help disperse the heat and works well either with or without a heater also in use at the time.

  • Install an outdoor heater.

If you can’t bear to miss out on outdoor entertaining for months at a time, have an outdoor heater installed and you’ll be able to enjoy al fresco dining all year round. The best option will depend on the openness and size of the space but there is a huge range of gas and electric heaters on the market today.

  • Insulate your hot water pipes to prevent heat loss.

Hot water systems use a lot of energy to heat up your water, so you want to lose as little of that heat as possible. When the weather gets colder heat loss as your water travels through your pipes only increases, but insulating your pipes can help minimise that loss.

  • Install flood lights if the way to your front door gets wet or slippery in winter.

This is especially helpful if you find yourself making a lot of mad dashes to the house when it’s raining. If you live on a street with Jacarandas be extra careful, as when the flowers fall and get wet they become dangerously slippery.

  • During storms secure any outdoor electrical equipment you have.

That means turning off unplugging and safely storing anything you can and protecting the rest as best you can with covers, regular checks and immediate repair if any parts get damaged.
